With now 4:4 points Hungary are on their way to the qualifications tournament after beating Germany. They are equal in points to Iceland now, as the Germans remain with 2:6 points.

Denmark one small step away from semi-finals

The favoured teams have made their way in the evening Main Round games of Match Day 1. Denmark took a close and thrilling victory against Poland, as France overran Hungary. Both teams took the lead in their group remaining unbeaten. For Denmark it was the sixth straight victory.

Group I:

After the first Match Day France and Spain (each 5:1 points) lead the ranking ahead of Iceland (4:2), Germany, Hungary (each 2:4) and Norway (0:6).

Thrilling draw in the final duel of group A

France and Spain tied in a high tensioned final match of group A. So everything is decided concerning the Main Round after 60 matches of the Preliminary Round. Iceland and Denmark are the only teams taking 4:0 points to the next stage. The starting composition is like this:

Group I in Jönköping:

Iceland 4 points, France 3 points, Spain 3 points, Hungary 2 points, Germany 0 points, Norway 0 points.

Group II in Malmö/Lund:

Denmark 4 points, Sweden 2 points, Poland 2 points, Argentina 2 points, Croatia 1 point, Serbia 1 point

Norway and Poland in the Main Round

Group B:
Japan –Hungary 24:28(8:13)
Hungary opened the gateway to the Main Round widely with their third victory, as Japan remain with only one victory (against Austria). It took the Hungarians only ten minutes to change a 4:4 to a 12:4 and to get a comfortable cushion for the rest of the match with the half time score of 13:8. After the break the Europeans left no doubt about the winner, as they increased the lead to 20:9. Feeling that they won the match already, the Hungarians lost their concentration, so Japan was able to reduce the gap, but could not endanger Hungary. Three minutes before the end the gap was only three goals (23:26), but the Japanese catch-up chase was much too late. Top scorer of the match was Gergö Ivancsik with nine goals for Hungary.

Norway – Brazil 26:25 (13:12)

Gauchos ride over Slovaks, easy victory for Hungary

Group B:

Hungary – Brazil 36:24 (18:11)

Thanks to their second victory Hungary still have good chances to qualify for the Main Round – but Brazil only showed little resistance in this one-sided game. In the upcoming games against Japan and Austria they can book their ticket, as Brazil will have to make their way to the President’s Cup with still no point on their account. The match was quite close until minute 19 (9:7 for Hungary), then the Europeans increased the gap to seven goals at the break. And the run-down remained the same in the second half, as Hungary was clearly dominant. 1500 spectators saw the first ten goal gap in minute 45 and the score of 28:18. Top scorer was Gergely Harsanyi with ten goals.

Group D:

Slovakia – Argentina 18:23 (9:7)

Hungary secure place in Olympics qualification tournament

Thanks to their 31:28 win over Poland the Hungarian team didn’t only reach the seventh place at this World Championship but booked their ticket for the Olympics qualification tournaments in April 2012. Poland ranks eight in the end and have to hope for one of the free places for those tournaments which will be decided at the European Championship 2012

We welcome another nine teams to Sweden in January next year.
