Egypt and Korea in the President’s Cup final

The President’s Cup final contains two continents, as Egypt and Korea have won their opening matches in the President’s Cup and meet for the final on Monday.

President’s Cup, match day 1:

Group I:

Egypt – Japan 34:28 (17:14)

The Egyptians needed some time to cope with the speedful match play of the Japanese, but after the 8:8 they had found their pace and extended the gap to 12:8 and 17:12 right before the break. Even as Egypt had gone away to a six goal distance twice, Japan was strong enough to close the gap again in the middle of the second half. But by extending the lead from 27:24 to 32:26 the Northern Africans decided the match and reached the final, which will be played on Monday in Skövde. Top scorers were Belal Mabrouk (8 goals for Egypt) and Makuoto Suematsu with seven goals for Japan.

Germany and Argentina complete Main Round

One former World Champion and a debutant complete the Main Round of the World Championship: Germany beat Tunisia in the decisive match of group A and Argentina took the points against their neighbor Chile to secure their first ever qualification for the best 12 teams. Aside Bahrain won their first ever World Championship match in handball history.

Group A:

Denmark, Serbia and Spain go on to Main Round

The next contenders made their way to the Main Round: As Denmark (against Algeria) and Spain (against Egypt) took their each fourth victory in their fourth match of the Preliminary Round they qualified for the next stage with now eight points. But both have real clashes ahead, as Denmark meet Croatia and Spain play against France on Thursday. Those both games will decide about the winners of Groups A and C. Thanks to the Danish victory also Serbia booked the ticket to the Main Round. Romania won their first match in this WCh.

After Match Day 4 is completed, those are the teams already qualified for the Main Round:

Group A: France, Spain

Group B: Iceland, Hungary, Norway

Group C: Denmark, Croatia, Serbia

Group D: Poland, Sweden

France and Croatia in the Main Round

Like Croatia in Group C before, France have already qualified for the Main Round in Group A after their clear (and third) victory over Bahrain. Host Sweden (against Korea), Iceland (against Japan) and Denmark (against Serbia) made huge steps to the Main Round after their each third victory, as they each only need one more point now. Norway have beaten Austria, as Egypt took their first points in the Northern African duel against Tunisia.

Third match day ends with “business as usual” – victories for France, Croatia and Denmark

Easy matches for the favourites, no chances for the outsiders: As the three medal contenders France, Denmark and Croatia remain spotless after two matches, Romania, Egypt and Algeria still wait for their first points.

Korea win President’s Cup final

hanks to a close 26:23 victory against Egypt Korea raised the trophy of the President’s Cup. Algeria won then 15/16 placement match.

Placement Match 13/14:

Egypt – Korea 23:26 (11:12)

The Korean team is the successor of Spain as winner of the President’s Cup at the Men’s World Championship after finishing 12th at the WCh in 2009 in Croatia before. The seven goals of Jung Park decided this game of two continents. The first half was a roller coaster as the lead changed constantly – but in the end equal with as close lead for the Egyptians. The second half was absolutely equal until the 17: 17, before Korea first extended the lead to 20:18 and 22:19 in minute 53. Then gthe game had been decided even as Egypt was able to keep the gap.

African Championship: Gold for Tunisia and Angola

Angola’s women and Tunisia’s men stood on top of the podium at the 19th African Championships in Egypt. As it was the tenth African Nations title for Angola, Tunisia won Gold for the eight time.

Angola beat Tunisia in a high tensioned women’s final which was decided only ten seconds before the end, 31:30. Tunisia won against the men’s team of host nation Egypt 24:21. As those four teams had been qualified for the next World Championships before, the men from Algeria and the women from Ivory Coast snatched the last tickets to Sweden (men) and Brazil (women) and took the Bronze medals. Algeria had no problems in winning against DR Congo 30:22, Ivory Coast finished the hopes of the Algerian women to qualify for WCH’s with both national teams by winning 32:28.
