What will happen, if…? – The situation before the last Match Day of the Preliminary Round
A lot of cases have been decided yet in the Preliminary Round of the World Championship – but several important decisions will be taken on the last Match Day of the Preliminary Round in all four groups. After 48 of in total 60 matches already ten teams have qualified for the Main Round – two places are still free in groups A and D.
But not only the qualification counts, but the number of points the teams take to the next stage is even more important. Here’s an overview on the current standings and the option still possible in the groups:
Group A:
France and Spain have already qualified for the Main Round with each four victories. Both will take at least two points to the Main Round in Jonköping – the exact number will be decided in the direct duel. The winner of this match go on with 4:0 points, the loser with 2:2, and in case of a draw both will have 3:3.
The last free place for the Main Round in this group will be decided in the duel Germany (4 points currently) and Tunisia (2). In the expected case of an Egyptian victory against Bahrain then Tunisia will have to beat Germany with a difference of at least five goals to qualify for the next stage. In case Egypt will not beat Bahrain, a “normal” victory is enough for Tunisia, as a draw is – in any case – enough for the German side. The third team of Group A going on to the Main Round will start with 0:4 points.
Group B:
All three Main Round participants are known already: Iceland (currently 8:0 points), Norway and Hungary (both 6:2 points). It’s also known that Hungary will start with 2:2 points in the Main Round. The final direct duel of Iceland and Norway will decide about the composition. If Iceland win they take 4:0 to Jonköping (Norway 0:4), if Norway win, they – and Iceland – have 2:2 on their account, in case of a draw Iceland have 3:1 and Norway 1:3.
Group C:
Denmark (currently 8 points), Croatia (7) and Serbia (5) are already qualified for the Main Round. Serbia will bring 1:3 points to the next stage, played in Malmö/Lund. The clash between Denmark and Croatia will bring the final decision about the base both teams have in the Main Round. If Denmark win, they start with 4:0 (Croatia 1:3), if Croatia win, they have 3:1 (Denmark 2:2) and in case of a draw Denmark have 3:1 and Croatia 2:2.
Group D:
What team will be the only Non-European nation in the Main Round? This question will be answered in Gothenburg today. Argentina (currently five points) have the best base, they at least need a draw against Chile to continue in the next stage. Korea (3 points) don’t only have to hope for an Argentine defeat against Chile, but also have to beat Slovakia with more than four goals difference. Korea and Argentina tied in the direct encounter, so if they’re equal in points in the end the total goal difference will be taken in consideration.
According to the third team going on to the Main Round the number of points can change for Sweden. Like Poland (8 points) the host (6 points) is already qualified for the Main Round. As Sweden lost their game against Argentina they would go with currently zero points is the “Gauchos” qualify, but in the direct duel against Poland, Sweden has the chance to increase their account. Poland will start with at least 2 points in the Main Round, not depending on the third qualifier. If Poland beat Sweden they have 4:0 points at the start. If Argentina go on they start with 2:2 points, if Korea qualify they start with 0:4 points in Malmö/Lund.
