The way to London – how to qualify for the Olympic Games

Each 12 women’s and men’s team will compete in the Olympics handball tournament in London 2012. Host Great Britain is directly qualified for both tournaments, same as the World Champions 2011 (Sweden for men and Brazil for women).

Additional four direct qualification places are given to the Continental Federations from Europe, Asia, Africa and Pan America. As the Women’s EURO has already been played as the first Continental qualification tournament, the others will follow until the Men’s EURO in January 2012. The winners of those Continental tournaments are directly qualified for the Olympics.

The remaining six places for London will be decided in each three IHF Olympics Qualification Tournaments in 2012 – the men’s tournaments will be played in April 2012, the women’s tournaments in May 2012. The each two best ranked teams of those tournaments are qualified for the Olympics.

How to qualify for those qualification tournaments?

The teams ranked 2 to 7 at the World Championships 2011 (Sweden and Brazil) book their tickets to those tournaments directly. The teams ranked 2 to 4 have the right to organize those tournaments as hosting nations.  The additional six places are given as Continental quota places: Africa, Asia, Pan-America and Europe each have one place, additionally the two continents ranked best at the World Championships 2011 in Sweden and Brazil receive another place for those tournaments. For the men’s qualification those two additional places are already decided, as Europe and Pan-America (thanks to the Argentine qualification for the Main Round in Sweden) are the best ranked continents.

The distribution for the places in the men’s qualification tournaments is the following:

Teams ranked 2 to 7 in Sweden               = 6 places

Europe: 2 places

Pan-America 2 places

Africa: 1 place

Asia: 1 place                                      = 12 places.

Those places (and the direct Olympics qualification for the winners) will be decided in the following Continental qualification tournaments:

February 2011: African Championships (Men and Women)

October 2011: Asian Women’s Qualification event

October 2011: Pan-American Games (Men and Women)

November 2011: Asian Men’s Qualification event

December 2011: Women’s World Championship

January 2012: Men’s European Championship

the game between denmark and sweden means nothing? what if sweden wins? is than sweden first in group and than can go on the 2nd in 2nd group or is it all over in this group denmark 1st, sweden 2nd? i'm confused because i've read in the article above sweden and denmark are playing versus france and spain and that will be decided in the game between spain and france. So game between denmark and sweden means nothing (only for the reputation) or am i wrong! PLEASE GIVE ME CORRECT ANSWER AND HELP ME!!!!
If Sweden win the game they will finnish in first place in the group just because they beaten Denmark. First place will meet second place in the other group in the semi-finals. So if Denmark beats Sweden and both France and Spain win it would be: France-Sweden and Denmark-Spain.
don't panic French team win !!
The team that wins the game between Sweden-Denmark today will win the group and if it´s a draw Denmark will win. But if both France and Spain win their games today Spain wins that group, or am I wrong? didn´t Spain beat France when they met eachother?
France and Spain have the same points with a best goal average for france.
No Linn they tied France sort of dominated for 50 minutes but then threw away a 6 goal lead and Spain pulled off a 28-28 draw. However since France slaughtered Hungary and thoroughly beat Germany their goal average is superior by like 10 which means unless they mess up against Iceland they probably get first. Nothing is certain though except for who the four semifinalists are.
It´s interesting to read the beginning of the article, where it states that Sweden won??? the WC 2011 for men, and Brazil for women. Have I missed something here????
Yeah Per Nilson I was confused about that too at first but I think they are just talking about where the world championships are taking place this year. Badly phrased though.
Yes, you did get something wrong. Sweden and Brazil are the organizer of the world championships, where the world champions are qualified for the Olympics.
But the above mentionned article is still a mess. 1. How many nations will participate at the olympic tournament? 16 or 24. 2. When the are 16 nations, the WC champion 2011 is qualified. 3. Whats about the 12 nations mentionned in the above article, are they qualified or not. I've never seen such a misleading article
Poorly written indeed ! 12 nations will participate in the olympics. (I mean : 12 for men and 12 for women). Qualification is as follows : Men : UK (OG host) + World Champion 2011 + 4 continental champions + best 2 teams of 3 specific tournaments ("IHF Olympics Qualification Tournaments") = 1 + 1 + 4 + 2*3 = 12 Women : UK (OG host) + World Champion 2011 + 4 continental champions + best 2 teams of 3 specific tournaments ("IHF Olympics Qualification Tournaments") = 1 + 1 + 4 + 2*3 = 12
Well, I hope it is readable : returns to line were deleted. Main point : 12 nations in both olympic tournaments (men and women) - not necessarily the same nations in both tournaments, obviously.
