Sweden fly on the wings of success

As the teams of Main Round group I had a rest day on Monday WCh host Sweden made a huge step to the semi-finals by their impressive 29:25 victory over Croatia. If Denmark take at least on point against Argentina later this evening both Northern Europeans teams are already qualified for the semi finals before their direct duel on Tuesday.

Group II:

Sweden – Croatia 29:25 (14:12)

The team was dancing on the field, the spectators were singing for minutes: After their great victories against Poland and Serbia this third straight win for Sweden opened the gate to the semi widely. With now 6:2 points Sweden is ahead of the Croats (3:5), which can’t reach the semis anymore. Now Sweden will cross their fingers for the Danes. Again the Swedish defense stood extra-ordinary strong. The huge middle block Tobias Karlsson and Magnus Jernemyr blocked the key attackers Ivano Balic and Igor Vori in a brilliant way.  And again goalkeeper Johan Sjöstrand was well prepared on the Croats – and saved in total more than 20 shots. After a nervous start of both teams the Swedes improved and were more patient in attacks. Thanks to the spectacular goals of Dalibor Doder they took the lead – but couldn’t increase it to more than goals before the break. And the host had to start the second half with a big burden, as Karlsson had received his second suspension right before the break. Top Croat player in the first 30 minutes was right wing Vedran Zrnic, who hadn’t only been cold as ice at his four penalty shots, but scored in total six times before the half time whistle. But Zrnic wasn’t enough after the break, as the Croats couldn’t stand the pressure in attack for eight minutes. They caused too many mistakes to reduce the gap to the Swedes, who were flying on the wings of success, supported by 10.000 spectators in Malmö. After goals of Doder and Ekdahl du Rietz and several more saves of Sjöstrand the distance was five goals for the first time in minute 35 (17:12). And the Croats shot much too early and were too hectic in this period to return to eye level again and to endanger Sjöstrand. But who thought the Croatian resistance was already broken, was wrong. By some changes in attacks the Balkan team reduced the gap again to 17:19 in minute 43, but when being close to the chances to equalize they missed the goal. Sweden kept calm in this crucial stage of the game – and still could count on Sjöstrand’s saves. Doder took the responsibility in the Swedish attack and with his seventh goal he extended the lead to 22:18, and when Jonas Larholm scored the 25:20 the Arena went crazy – and Croatia took their time-out eight minutes before the end. And coach Goluza found the right words, as his team scored three straight goals – everything was open again in his match full of emotions. But then the “Man of the Match”, Dalibor Doder decided this tough fight with his eighth goal, the 27:24 in minute 56. The rest of the evening was big party in blue and yellow. Top scorers of this match were Zrnic (nine goals for Croatia) and Doder (8 for Sweden).

Sweden will win gold, well played! Heja Sverige.
Let's see how many "buuhuuhu the referees are on their side" comments this article gets...
Everything was over for us (Croatia) the moment Goluža started with his calculations at the halftime of the game against Denmark. I said this was a crap decision and here it is....and all of his comments "The referees are this, the referees are that..." I feel sick of him. Well deserved winn for Sweden. Good luck in semi-finals from a Croat from Zagreb. :)
I have one question: WHY isn't both semi-finals played in Malmö?? The arena in Kristianstad is awfully small! It is NOT a World Championship worthy! (And, it is really bad from the organizers that it has been told that all DK's and Sweden's matches would be played in Malmö.. That was a really HUGE and unforgiveable mistake... Thousands of Danes have bought tickets to friday in Malmö, and come on, there is at least just as many Danish spectators as Swedish... )
I sent 2 tickets for semifinal im Malmo. 28 january 2011. 2000 SEK. Kontakt: Wpaprocka@wp.pl
It sucks! I have tickets for the semi in Malmö and Handball2011 told me that Denmark would for sure play semi in Malmö. The swedish organization sucks!
Why did they even change it? I've also heard that swe - den (sweden, hah jk) game would be in malmö. A "little" embarrassing that the organization isn't the best, cause i'm swede myself and this is a WORLDCUP, things should be better!
Would it be possible to move the danish semifinal to Malmø - it is very bad for a lot of us, that we now have tickets for a Semifinal between possible Sweden and France. Not what we hoped for, when we where told that Denmark would always play in Malmø. I think you have to do something to help all of the danish fans. Best regards Lasse
Could you consider making it possible to make cancellation of the tickets we have bought for the semifinal in Malmø, now that Denmark will not be playing there? I am sure a lot of swedish people would like to bye the ticket to support the Swedish team and I am sure the Arena will be sold out. Best Regards Lasse
Croats played a weak game and Sweden deserved the win. The stupid conspiracy theories about referees are just an excuse from the weak trainer of the Croatian team for his incompetency. Hopefully Sweden will take the crown. Congrats. Croatian from Canada.
Croatia sucks. Their players are to full of themselves, and they have no heart for the game. Their shooters with 1 exception couldn't hit broad side of a building. Denmark, and France players can pick corners with ease, and also come up with some amazing curving shots. Also, Croatia is playing without a goalie. The two they have are totally useless, and have reflexes of a dead horse. I have never seen such pathetic keepers. I hope they kept their day jobs.
Just move all the matches back to Gothenburg, that's were the real action is found.
Tough luck for the Croats. Croatia has much better team than the Swedish one, but Sweden is playing at home and that gives them extra boost. Even though Croatia has a great team, it is playing very badly at this tournament and has no businsess going into the semi finals. France, Spain and Iceland, whoever qualifies would all slaughter the current play of Croatia. In my opinion there are only 2 teams playing perfect handball on this tournament, Denmark and France, they will compete for the gold, I hope Denmark wins, but seeing France playing against my team Iceland in the finals of Olympics and semi finals in Euro Austria my money is on France, nobody can win them in important matches, simply too good.
It's stupid that non of the games plays in Stockholm, Globen! I dont understand how people can say that Sweden dont deservs to win this, you all is haters! Sweden have grone soo much in theese past years and they ARE better then lots of teams in this game, just accept it! They may not win gold, but they have done one hell of a worldcup! And just accept that Sweden were a better team today against Croatia, they went all the way. /Stine from Denmark.
You are a Balkan, you insulting, arrogant, provocative and malicious author of the report. Tell us in our face that we are "Balkans" if you dare. Gonna kick your ass for that. You gonna be punished for this insult, you poor, wretched, malicious person.
Moved the semifinals back to Malmø, if not, bouth semifinals will not get all the specktators it deserv as I think a lot of danes all ready bought ticket when Denmark was sure to play the semifinal. I don´t think danish spectators will come to malmø to see a semifinal without Denmark.
hey don't bother with poor and malicious person, let him be...i've recently read some comments refering to Balkans and i understand both points of view, ours(Croats) and theirs, trying to put it all in the same bracket and saying about term as non-insulting(geographical meaning bla bla bla) which is correct...but the truth lies in completely different understanding of 2 terms; for us Croats word ''Scandinavia'' is measure of success, wealth, education, innovations, prosperity, or all put together, something that we seek and dream for and for you my swedish author, the Word ''Balkans'' means all that was said before and is not worth mentioning again so please be professional at your work, be cooperative and value other suggestions if not emotions of which you so much escape...
Please let us talk handball here. This is NOT the right forum for political discussions. As an objective Swede i do understand your reaction, if feeling that you have been offended, but I am sure it wasn't the intension of the authour. So please accept this apology from us ignorant Swedes. The organisation has not been perfect either. Agree. But let's get focused on what really matters: The Game. There have been a lot of surprising results. France and Denmark, doing their works as expected. Spain vs Iceland will be an extraordinary fight for semi. Can't wait. Serbia, Germany, Poland, Norway and Kroatia (where was Balic?) has been a disappoinment to me. So far the biggest (and gladest for me) has been Sweden. I honestly didn't think they could go this far.Just take an extra look at the two yongsters #10 Niclas Ekberg, 22yrs, how cool ain't that guy at 7m. and from his right wing. Not to mention #17 Oscar Carlén, also 22yrs. His commitment and fighting spirit is something to admire and learn from. Also got a shot like a horsekick. These guys seldom get the headlines but is very useful to the teammix Sweden has shown up. I'm sure there will be great matches in the remaing final rounds and may the best team win, whatever area or country they come from. I'm sure they will Good Luck all Hanball-lovers.
I must complain. The level of English in this article is pathetic. It is just full of errors, It seems that the author is completely unable to write a simple sentence without making serious mistakes. There are people from abroad reading this, so please hire a translator or whatever. Embarrassing.
First of all, congrats to Sweden for reaching the semis. It is always fun to play among the last four with a home crowd backing you up. Secondly, it seems that many people here have forgotten that both Croatia and Sweden has been at the top level (EC, WC, Olympics) of handball for the last two decades. The difference is that Sweden has been out of the top eight nations during the last ten years while Croatia has been consistently among the two-three best handball nations and at times unbeatable. With a new coach taking over after Lino Cervar, Slavko Goluza has some pretty big shoes to fill. Give him some time, let's see how he does within the next two-three years. It's just lunacy to start searching for a new head coach after just one champioship. He needs time to implement his system and his handball mentality. Even if the Croatian roster is at the absolute top level playing at the best European handball clubs, it takes time for a new coach to get results. Again, congrats to Sweden and hope you reach the finals!
