Sweden and Denmark in the semi-finals

Sweden and Denmark in the semi-finals

Both Northern European neighbours have reached the WCh semifinals after the second Match Day of the Main Round: After Sweden had beaten Croatia, Denmark took both points against Argentina. For Denmark it was the seventh victory in the seventh match – and now it’s decided that no other team can overtake Sweden anymore. Both semi-finalists will meet on Tuesday for the group winner – and a draw is enough for Denmark to remain on top. No matter what team will win the group the Danes play their semi in Kristianstad and Sweden in Malmö.

Group II:

Poland – Serbia 27:26 (10:11)

Poland and Croatia play for the places three and four in group II in the direct duel on Tuesday: After Croatia had lost against Sweden and have 3:5 points, Poland took the chance to overtake them by beating Serbia in a real thriller and have 4:4 points now. Both defense sides nearly neutralized themselves in the whole 60 minutes. The attack players of both teams could come through in the first half, so the spectators in Lund only saw 21 goals. After Poland was in lead the Serbs caught up and took the lead – but couldn’t extend it to more than two goals and nothing was decided at the break. When Marco Vujin scored his seventh individual goal to 11:10 for the Serbs the Poles took the game more serious, stopped Vujin and turned the game. Thanks to some wing goals of Mariusz Jurasik Poland went away to 17:13 in minute 40 and 20:15 in minute 42. A time-out and a goalkeeper change then brought new faith to the Serbs, who scored five straight goals and equalized at the score of 20:20.  And the rest was absolute tension: The lead changed constantly in the last minutes, after the 24:23 for Poland Serbia scored twice the Poland equalized again to 26:26. Serbia was in ball possession 25 seconds before the end, but lost the ball. Polish coach Bogdan Wenta took his time-out – and five seconds before the end Karol Bielecki scored the winning goal to 27:26.

Argentina – Denmark 24:31 (12:17)

Denmark intermediately was close to a defeat, but in the end the team in red and white secured their straight seventh victory, which meant the qualification for the semi-final with 8:0 points. But Argentina was a much stronger opponent the Danes had expected – in the middle of the second half the game was close to turn – and then the saves of goalkeeper Niklas Landin brought the Danes back on the winner’s way.  The Danish coach Ulrik Wilbek had changed his team in contrast to the victory against Poland, but even his substitute players on the wing position fit well: Lasse Svan Hansen and Anders Eggert started brilliant and were the key factors for the Danish 10:5 lead in minute 14. But then the Gauchos woke up, found their rhythm and decreased the distance to 10:13 thanks to their powerful attack players. But as the Argentine team played too high risk in the last stage of the first half, the Danes were leading with a five goal distance at the break. After they scored the 19:12 the Danes decelerated completely, missed too many chances and caused a lot of unforced mistakes. Argentina took the profit and reduced the distance to 17:21 thanks to their offensive defense and several counter attacks. Still no reaction on the Danish side, but suddenly it was 22:24, when coach Wilbek changed his goalkeeper from Sörensen to Landin. But the Danes had lost their pace completely, as Argentina played with full power and concentration. The Gauchos had several chances to reduce to only one goal, but missed them. Two lost Argentine balls then gave Denmark new air to breath, as they scored twice by counter attack to 27:23 seven minutes before the end. And the Danes could really be lucky to have “survived” this crucial period thanks to the decisive saves of Niklas Landin. When Mikkel Hansen scored the 29:23 (his seventh individual goal) the last resistance of the Southern Americans was broken. Top scorer was Hansen (seven goals for Denmark), three Argentines scored each three times.

To be honest it was more the refferees who made it hard for the Danes rather than the Argentine players. But I won't be the one to complain and moan about it so I'll let it pass.
worst judges ever ! And Argentina are really bad losers ! No fair play from them in the last 10 min. Congrats DK !
Vamos argentina!!! No se pudo, pero buen susto se llevaron. Tenemos un equipo joven. La próxima copa va a ser la del gran salto
Fun! :)
How the hell is it that Sweden have reached the Semi-finals? Poland has got enough to reach them in the group.
Argentina: Technically & resisatnce good. Unsporting behaviour with fists and sausage legs when touched by their opponents.Good gk in Garcia. Players injured unlucky. Refs: ?????????????
Because, Veronica, Sweden beat Poland and is therefore placed ahead of them. Even if Poland beat Croatia by a million goals Sweden would still beat Poland because they're are better internally.
And Elcho, I used Google Translate to get your message so I understand it only vaguely, but I agree. Complaining about the refferees won't change the fact that the result turned out the way it did,´even if Argentina won.
Argentina: most of their players are amateurs!!! Don´t forget it. Well done!!!
Stop complaining. Danemark are the best team in the world and complain. The judges were terrible, but did not favor Argentina. There are times to pull luxuries, and I think that with the match ending is a provocation. We are not an example of good losers, do not like losing anything. Even in sports where frankly we are inferior (as in handball) ... it's in our blood. But I think the challenge and making excuses is not good winners. It is my humble opinion from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Most of our players are amateurs and we fought as equals. Come on Argentina!
How can these Ivory Coast referees be at the World Championships? They are a big joke - completely useless. A shame to ruin WC matches with such bad referees. The Danish coach Ulrik Wilbek said after the match that they are the worst referees he has ever seen in his coaching career. They are not even good enough to be referees at the President's Cup. What a joke.
I agree Lars, and the Serbian judges (who judged Iceland - Germany) are a joke and should not judge games in this kind of tournament.. Big mistake and has ruined a lot of important games. I really hope that this will not happen again in a big tournament like WC.
Stop mourn! are the best in the world and complain? They won it, the judges were terrible, but did not favor Argentina. There are times to pull luxuries, and I think that with the match set is a troll. We are not an example of losers, do not like losing anything. Even in sports where frankly we are less (as in handball) ... it's in our blood. But I think the challenge and making excuses is not good winners. It is my humble opinion from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Most of our players are amateurs and we fought as equals. Come on Argentina! In the next drink we're going to win by weeping!
To be fair, complaining about the referees is completely valid if they do suck, which was the case. Incompetent referees have nothing to do on the WCh court. If you win or not is totally irrelevant, as it has nothing to do with the outcome of the game. The WCh is supposed to be the highest level of handball, thus the judges should equal that level. Blaming a loss on bad referees, however, is a completely different thing, unless they are obviously biased.
we count on you Croatia....I dont think that you're so weak to loose against Sweden....emotions are gone...so good bye and good luck especially for DENMARK
No one is complaining that the referees favoured anyone... They didn't... But they were still bad - seriously bad! Missed calls in both ends, broke the teams rythm, and had no control of the game when Argentinia started gaining on Denmark... Not what you'd expect from referees at this level! As for the results - it's a bit of a shame really that both Denmark and Sweden have already qualified for the semis - would have been more exciting if there was something other than placement to be played for on tuesday. Doesn't really matter weather you're 1st or 2nd in the grp - everyone's trying not to run into France, but really someone has to beat them eventually or they'll take the title again :)
Agree 100 % with afrikanen. This is a WC we expect the best from all the teams and I think we are also entiteled to expect the best from the referees. Lets us all hope we will see the best referees in the world in the semifinals as well as the finals.
Dont understand why they decide to place a semifinal in Kristianstad... the arena only takes 4000 spectators, and as far as I know it is already sold out...who have bought the tickets?? Cannot be danish/spanish/french/islandic fans..what kind of a game will it be with no real fans in the stands?? hopeless decision by the organisers. They should have decided to play both semis in Malmö!!
Le Danmark sera l'une des finalistes, 100%! Une finale France-Danmark, peut-etre???
VAMOS ARGENTINA CARAJO!
I live in Sweden and it's typical to find the Swedes unorganized. Have a look at the Official Magazine, all the teams have numbers next to their names, not Sweden. The ticnet.se website is absolutely TERRIBLE. I am shocked as dismayed that Sweden and its lack of brain-trust decided to take the above tack and squeeze the Danish spectators into a smaller arena. I believe the catch all word here is STUPIDITY and lack of basic financial and management skills to run an organization. Does it make sense to move the Swedish National team to Gothenburg? Please explain the logic behind this move. Of course we'll not get an explanation. Clearly Malmö is more home-centric for Denmark and Gothenburg is more home-centric for Sweden. Make money and separate the the two teams. Wake up organizers and figure out how to make money, satisfy fans and keep everyone happy. I believe the only team happy maybe the prima-donna called the Swedish National Team. This whole championship has been a huge joke no wonder the last time it was in Sweden was 18 years ago. For Heaven Sakes, Sweden !!!!
In all the years I've watch Handball have I ever witnessed such poor officiating from referees. If I didn't no better, I felt the refs were trying to keep Argentina in the match. To their credit (Danish National Team) maintain their cool and played a great match. I write this not as a Dane but as an American living in Sweden. I also believe the organizers unfairly stacked the semi-final match in favor of Sweden and against Denmark. I am personally disgusted with the whole organizers management team of how the Championship and the ticketing system was implemented. Good Luck to Denmark and Sweden http://nordic-handball.blogspot.com
Denmark and France are by far the best 2 teams. It will be fun watching them in the final. However, France will easily win it. They have the best goal keeper, and this well make the difference. Biggest losers are the Croats and the Serbs. Example of what can happen when you are so full of yourself, and behave like your s**t doesn't smell. When you play the game you have to go in 100% mentally and physically, not half ass like those 2 countries. How can Ivano Balic, the best player in the world be invisible every game??? He embarrassed himself, his team, and his country. Everything in life happens for a reason...I hope he learned his lesson.
The Argentinians were acting like little spoiled brats, and referees are human, they start feeling sorry for cry babies. So they gave they made some stupid rulings to prevent the Argentinians from running off the court. The Norwegians were bad against Iceland, but this Argentinian attitude tops it all, totally pathetic. Too bad, I was starting to seriously like Argentinia as a team. The only team coming outside Europe that I am really fascinated by now is Japan, what a COOL team. Incredibly fast and plays great handball.
It's been said before: World Cup should be a gather together for the worlds best - not a training tournement for wannabee's. I know the referies should practice serious handball some time - but if you really want to train terrible ref's like those two from the Ivory Coast, could you please put them in a meaningless match of being 13 og 14 instead of using them in a serious match about semifinals. I think the organisation really dont understand the concept of World Cup...
Veronica writes: How the hell is it that Sweden have reached the Semi-finals? Poland has got enough to reach them in the group. Sweden won Poland. Should they both end in 6 points goes Sweden to semifinals due their win over Poland.
The polish team can not reach the semis, because they previously lost to Sweden. So when two teams have an equal amount of points, the one who moves further in the tournament, is the one that won the match between the two teams. If that had been a draw, and the teams still had had the same amont of goals, different rules would apply.
Clearly the journalist who wrote this peace is a little bit of an amateur. The danish team was not surprised by the argentinians. We were expecting a tough match, but we were also expecting to win it. And thats what happened. Its not without reason, that they beat the swedes. I think that Argentina has wonderful players. And no - we didnt get lucky - the argentinian team was lucky to close the gap so much, because of bad referees. Very bad referees. I have never seen anything like it. But clearly the journalist must be a swede. We wont underestimate the swedes either. They have the homeadvantage, but theres still a chance that we can win the whole thing. Luckily, we are allready satisfied. Our team is young and should first peak in 2 or 3 years. So are the swedish team. So it looks like the future in mens handball belongs to Scandinavia :o)
I have to agree with @brian - the article is not very impressive. In what way is it that you are "close to a defeat" when you never lead by less than two goals? Why should it be considered "lucky" that Denmark didn't panic after being pressured by Argentina but just kept their cool and closed the match by a safe margin? Finally, why not mention that Argentina completely lost their temper in the last ten minutes and almost startet a mass fight after the game?

sweden in semi finals? what happens if croatia beat poland and sweden loose to denmark?
@Smegma Balic is invisible because he is not the best player in the world, he never was. He is the biggest show-off in the world but that is not quite the same. As for this tournament, I think Balic would be lucky to make it into top 20 players.
Then Croatia will have 5 points and Sweden still 6, 6>5, Sweden advances....
This article is not biased at all, huh? ;) Who the hell writes these articles anyway? When I want to read an article about something, I don't need to read all those adjectives, give us some facts, PLEASE! That said, GO DENMARK!
Of course referees were a disaster, but I don't agree they completely favored Argentina; they made mistakes (huge ones and a lot of them) for both sides, may be a little more favoring Argentina's side but definitely not affecting the score in any moment. Referring to those comments about argentine players behaviour, I don't agree either. In any moment of the championship they play dirty or violent. Handball is sport with much physical contact and in fact were two argentinan players who left this match with scars in their faces. About the little engagements in the end, it was the danish player who took the final 7m who deserves to be blamed. The match had been hard and tough indeed and there was no need to execute the shot in the way he did in the las second when there was nothing left to be decided. It was like moking the goalkeeper and the argentinian players felt it like that and they just reproched it to the danish player, just in heat of the moment. That 7m was more from a bad winner rather than the reaction was from a bad loser.
Was the penalty shot taken legally? If it was, who decides how a shooter should execute the shot? I always thought, that was up to the shooter to decide that, the goalie either stops it or not. Of course its OK when Messi runs around and makes fools out of other football players. The world marvels and pronounces him the worlds best player. Argentina if you can dish it out, be prepared to also be on the receiving end.
Serbia and Croatia are the biggest disappointments at this World Championship. Good luck to Sweden, hopefully they will win gold. http://www.worldofbasketball.org
DESPUES DE ESTE PARTIDO, HAY MUCHAS COINCIDENCIAS, LOS ARBITROS NO ESTABAN A LA ALTURA DE ESTA INSTANCIA, (CON OTROS EUROPEOS HABRIA SIDO PEOR). DINAMARCA, POR EXPERIENCIA Y JERARQUIA, ES MUY SUPERIOR A LA ARGENTINA, ESTOS PIBES VAN A CRECER JUGANDO EN LAS LIGAS MAS IMPORTANTES, COMO LO VIENEN HACIENDO LOS MAS GRANDES. EXCELENTE DEFINIDOR EL WING, LO DEL PENAL FUE UNA DEMOSTRACION MAS DE SU HABILIDAD E IMPROVISACION, ME HUBIERA GUSTADO QUE ESO LO HAYA HECHO CUANDO ESTABAMOS A 2 GOLES.... SE LA HUBIERA TIRADO A LA CABEZA, Y SI PUSIERON A LOS TITULARES ERA PORQUE SE LES VENIA EL AGUA, NO LLEGAMOS. SON MUY FUERTES LOS DANESES, SE LES FUE LA MANO CON LOS GOLPES A LA CARA, DESPUES HABLAN DE FAIR PLAY Y MAL PERDEDORES.... EN FIN.... YA VA HA HABER REVANCHA. GRACIAS GLADIADORES, DEJARON TODO. ESPERO SIGAN ASI.
Rolf, you are right. I'm argentinian. But I love this sport, and in any other moment I would have even applaud that goal (even during this match), no doubt it was really a beautiful shot, but I'm questining the moment and circumstances. I was watching the match on TV and my instant reactionwas "Not now!!". Perhaps the guy's intention was not purposely to offend the rivals and he just wanted to relax after a match with much tension (just watch some coach's reactions when Argentina got closer in 2nd half), but again there was no need. I'm convinced that if that shot had been dicisive, if match were tied or one goal below, he wouldn't have executed it the same way.

Carlos: THe last penalty shot was BRILLIANT ..... Honestly: THe ones of us who loves the sport of handball also loves the extraordinary things... like lots of "twisting" the ball from the corner, or for that sake the magnificent attack from Argentina where one attacker delivers the ball to another ... behind his back and via the floor ... and naturally penalties like Eggert's. They a stunningly entertaining... and what is wrong with a little fun like that? Do you actually think it is better to shoot the goalkeeper in the head?
