Spain, Sweden, Croatia and Germany start with victories

The Main Round started with a surprise: Germany beat Iceland, it was the first defeat for the Northern Europeans in Sweden. Aside Spain (against Norway) and Croatia (against Argentina) took clear victories. Sweden can hope for the semis after beating Serbia.

Group I:

Spain – Norway 33:27 (15:12)

Spain improved their position in the race to the semi-finals by this opening victory. With now five points the Iberians can hope for the semis, in contrast to Norway, remaining with zero points, but still hoping for a ticket to the Olympics qualification tournaments. The first period was on eye level as both teams were equal until the score of 5:5 in minute 14. But in between two minutes the Spaniards extended to 9:5 as Norway played weak – and later-on the Iberians led with a five goal difference. Thanks to their goalkeeper Steinar Ege Norway reduced to three goals at the break. But everything changed completely after the break, when Spain only needed twelve minutes, before the score was 22:13 – the pre-decision! The rest of the match was cosmetics by the Norwegians, which reduced to six goals in the end, but couldn’t endanger the poniards. Top scorer was Norwegian pivot Bjarte Myrhol.

Germany – Iceland 27:24 (15:13)

First Main Round points for Germany, first defeat for Iceland during this WCh: This 24:27 mean a huge strike for the Northern Europeans in their semi campaign. The Germans celebrated two important points on their way to qualify for a Olympics qualification tournament. Thanks to their strong defense Germany turned a 0:2 in a 6:2 – and later-on they led with a five goal difference. But as the Icelandics reduced the gap to two goals at the break, the game remained full of tension.  Both teams had problems in finding their rhythm after the re-start and Iceland equalized by a penalty shot of Olafur Stefansson at the 18:18. But the game didn’t change – as the Germans had their strongest period. Led by Holger Glandorf, who scored four times in this crucial stage, Germany extended the lead pre-decisively to 24:19. Afterwards the Germans controlled the match and their opponent and took a well-deserved victory. Top scorer of the game was Icelandic Alexander Petterson.

Group II:

Croatia – Argentina 36:18 (19:6)

Perfect opener for Croatia, free lesson for Argentina: Croatia now have 3:3 points on their account, as the gauchos remain with two points. Croatia started like a blizzard and Argentina stood on the field while being overran in the first 15 minutes. As the Balkan team played highly concentrated in attack and stood like a wall in defense the gauchos didn’t have a chance. After the 5:1 Croatia extended the gap pre-decisively to 13:3 – at the break the distance was already 13 goals, as Argentina was far away from their performances they had shown in the Preliminary Round. Croatia scored from all positions, and Argentina was not more than a playing ball to them. Even as Argentina started to score after the break, the distance remained with more than ten goals all the time. Recognizing that the goal difference in the end might decide, this result nearly meant three points for the Croats. Top scorers were Zrnic and Buntic (seven goals for Croatia) and Simonet (five goals for Argentina).

Serbia – Sweden 24:28  (13:12)

Thanks to a brilliant defense and goalkeeper Johan Sjöstrand  Sweden can hope for the semi-finals: By beating Serbia the WCh host now have 4:2 points on their account, as Serbia (1:5) seems to be out of the race to the semis after the first Main Round Match Day. Serbia had the better start thanks to the goals of pivot Rastko Stojkovic and Marku Vujin, but after the 7:5 the Swedish team changed the goalkeeper from Mathias Anderson to Johan Sjöstrand – and then the game became equal. Sjöstrand saved some important shots and his teams took the profit in attack. But the physical strong Serbians were not impressed and still found enough holes in the Swedish defense, as aside their goalkeeper Darko Stanic saved well. At the break Serbia was in lead 13:12. Sweden started well in the second took the lead at 15:14. Serbia had to work much harder for every goal than the host with their easy attacks. Aside Sweden took the profit from several  Serbian two minutes suspensions, but they couldn’t extend the lead. Despite this pressure on the Serbians the match remained absolutely close with changing leads until minute 50. As the Serbs missed three straight chances, the Swedes extended the lead to 23:20 by two goals of Kim Ekdahl du Rietz. Serbian coach Vukovic took his time-out, after his attack seemed to lose concentration. But nothing changed: Sjöstarnd saved incredible, the Swedish defense led by Magnus Jernemyr had built up a real wall – and Serbian couldn’t break through. When again Ekdahl du Rietz hammered the ball into the goal to 25:21 and Sjöstrand saved the next Serbian shot the match was decided at the 25:21 in minute 57. The Serbian resistance had been broken, the Malmö Arena went crazy. Top scorers were Vujin (eight goals for Serbia)  and Ekberg and Ekdahl with each six for Sweden.

tommorow we will win sweden.. we are back . go CROATIA
Iceland has won 6 of the last 7 games (before this game) against Germany. But no when we needed it the most, we choked against the Germans. Nice one Germany! congratulation. But i think that the Serbian judges can go and pack their bags and take the next plain home. Their judging sometimes were weird and questionable. Scandal ! First defeat in the tournament is a fact, OK shi* happens, next we play Spain, and like in the semi finals in the Olympics in Beijing we must win that game and draw against France (ouch..) to go to the semi.
Ok we get it Croatia is located in the Balkan area, now please stop referring to Croatia as Balkan county in every single article, please. some of us don't feel like that. Thank you.
I am Croatian, and a proud Balkanac!!!!! Tomorrows game again Sweden will be tough. Swedes have class
I must say, I'm really proud of Germany. I was surprised by that victory of my country, but I also hope that Iceland will win against Spain and France, because I adore the Icelandic Team and hope they'll win the tournament, even If I'm german. Go Iceland and go Germany! (:
yee!!! tomorow beat sweden and and we(poland) beat u in last game;]
Ohh well, Germany won this game, but we will win Spain. We are the Vikings of the north.Áfram Ísland!
tomorow sweden is going to feel croatian power and rage.....not even referees can't help you! p.s. yes croatia is in balkan peninsula, but why do you need to wright it in every article?? is it malicious attempt? balkan is also in europe, you scandinawian rasists!
Balkan is a Turkish and highly insulting word used for non-Turkish people of southeastern (SE) Europe. It means "chain of wooded mountains" or "wooded mountains" (depending on the source). You had better stop using "Balkan" for Croats, Serbs and other people from SE Europe because we aren't Turks, we don't live on mountains (very few of us do), we have civilized the world by indispensable discoveries of our own men (Tesla has given the world alternate current, Croats have given tie, pencil was patented in Croatia by a Slovak man Penkala etc.), many of us hate that derisive word and because you gonna be hit hard by some of us if you call us "a Balkan" or at least you gonna be punished by God for that highly insulting misdeed.
Let's hope for a good and fair game without any excess... The best team should win, and lets see who will be better tomorrow. Forget bothering about how people call area you come from, as some definitely have no bad thoughts. Should Swedes complain if they are called Scandinavians? So what? ... you are how you feel and think, and MOSTLY how you act and behave! Most of Croatia is geographically on the Balkan peninsula i(under the river Sava). Also whats the problem with Turks, I know a few great people from there. Stop with this prejudices and open your mind! Good luck on the game tomorrow to all sides...
Tomorrow, we gonna beat sweden and show to world what is power of the best balkan country! and than we will win match against poland , cuz we're the best team in theworld in this moment! Sweden came in 2nd round because refferes helped you!!! LET'S GO COWBOYS <3 CROATIA <3
The German team really surprised me, they played world class handball today, with this kind of play they would have beaten everybody. Heiner Brand obviously planned this through, played all his hidden aces today which we were not expecting since they didnt experiment with it in the 2 friendlies we played against them. Iceland probably went ahead of themselves and were over confident because of its 5 wins in a row on the tournament, but this game could cost us the semi finals seat. So good job Germany, you deserved to win. But on another note I must complain a bit about the referees. They called off at least 3 perfectly valid goals and gave us freethrows instead. Then they didnt give us freethrows at least 4-5 times when there was an obvious foul, German defenses for example standing way behind the line and preventing Robert Gunnarsson on the line from scoring, one time pascal hens blocked Þorir Olafsson so totally from jumping, that he didnt even manage to shot at the goal, but threw the ball out of the court. Another time, also in the right corner Olafur Stefansson is blocked by I think it was Pascal Hens, he was clearly behind the line and upstructed the shot, and they didnt even call a freethrow on it. So Im very unhappy with the referees, but in all fairness I dont think we would have won even if the referees had been decent, Germany was simply playing beautifully and very aggressive in the defence making it almost impossible to score for us.
Today, we're going to beat Sweden....all our thoughts are now focused on that game tonight. And stop callling us" the Balkans". That word is often used to say that people from this region have a bad behaviour, that this is a bad, mess regionfilled with wars, ethnic cleansing and other bad things.... I could tell you more about that because I'm studying geopolitics at my faculty also...So, if you must say something....better use South-Eastern Europe. You don't wanna stand on Croat's foot! I wonder how you will call us when Croatia becomes a part of European Union. To beat Sweden is our next goal! GO CROATIA, GO COWBOYS!!!!!!! And greetings from Zagreb!!! ABOVE ALL, CROATIA!!!! IZNAD SVIH, HRVATSKA!!!!!
i don't care if someone refers to croatia as balcan country. i'm croatian and i'm proud of it! :D
Well, lets see who will win, it will be interesting!!! With Balkans a geographical region is marked. Whem you enter EU I believe you will not fly to scandinavia or? At least Greece did not... and they ar not insulted by words and are one of the greatest world cultures ever. You should accept who you are, where you are and show all good coming from there, instead of thinking that changing names will change the mess that too often happesn where you live (whatever the name you give to this place). Get real! As you perform in many spots, try to perform in other areas and all will respect Balkan. Well - at least accept that there are many that do not freaking understand your frustration with that word. WHat matters is DOING not talking and naming. So lets see what you can do tomorrow, just dont make any mess in the arena as too ofteh happens when your SouthEuropean teams play football... Can we call you SountEuropan or that is bad too? Unbeleivable!! Be proud as you talk on your supporters shirts...
Well said viki, that's what Im talking about, Lets see the game tomorrow, and regardless who wins we can have a beer or two to celabrate good handball
anything but beating sweeds by 3-5 goals of difference would be enormous surprise. croats are tough,powerfull,quick....no chance to beat them. at least,semi-final for croatia is reasonable prediction.
This comment is for so called “journalist” who wrote this article: Please stop referring to Croatia as a Balkan country in every article you write about Croatia. I beg of you to go on a map of Europe and find where Balkan mountain is and then find where Croatia is (Central Europe!). Instead of referring to Croatia as a Balkan country you can refer to Croatia as a Mediterranean country which it is. Please do your homework before you write this so called articles and match reports. It just shows how ignorant you are! Best of luck.
I'm looking forward to today's match and I hope it will be a great one! Best of luck to our Swedish friends too! May the best team win. GO CROATIA! :) P.S. Any label containing 'Balkan' is normally considered derogatory in Croatia, i.e. it is used to denote lack of culture and primitivism in general, so I'll join the chorus and say that I'm opposed to it.
I repeat, all who call SE Europe people "Balkans" are looking for trouble and will have it sooner or later. It's the same as calling a black man "nigga" etc. It's highly insulting term and even Wikipedia admits it. Whoever says "Balkan" isn't a derisive and derogatory term implying primitivism and other negative connotations is clearly malicious and a liar. Shame and punishment on all such.
Whats wrong with you Croats. Nobody gives a toss about the word Balkans except yourselves. I classify Slovenia and Slovakia as Balkan countries and I have enourmous respect for them and I dont care if they are from the Balkans or Scandinavia. Just bloody hard working people and very professional in their macro economics and have great culture. 1. If you are unhappy with the word Balkan being linked to war and genocide. Ok, Understandably, but thats not this commentators fault. THATS YOUR OWN FAULT. Scandinavians dont go and blow each other up and expect Germans or French people to start referring to them as "Wonderlanders" instead of Scandinavians just because the word Scandinavia would be linked to war after their own doing. We dont call Americans Mexicans just because USA is always killing people around the world. 2. Even though the word balkans has its origins from Turkish doesnt have any weight here. The word Scandinavia probably comes from Latin and could literally mean "goats ass" for all I know, nobody gives a toss.
Sweden plays ok when the ref is from Norway
Funny, Norway plays like crap when the ref is from Sweden. Lol. :D
you can call Croatia whatever you want, they are the most fear full representation for years.
It's funny that many blame sweden cause they think sweden always has got the referees on their side. But sweden is also the team which have got most suspensions in the tournament...
Croatia in 15th and 16th century defended the rest of Europe from invasion of the Turks! It was part of Austrian-Hungarian empire and Venice, it was under the influence of Central Europe and Mediterranean, so Croatia's culture is not even close to Balkan's culture! Not even Croatia is geographically part of the Balkan peninsula! In 1990s we were in the war that we were imposed, not which we started. Now we are blamed for that war equally as those who tried erase us from world map, not just our country, but our people too! It's time to stop keeping our mouth shut and quietly looking what European chauvinists are doing to us and start fighting for ourselves! GO CROATIA!
hrvatskaaaaaa
@proud_to_be_croat You werent forced into the war against Serbia, Croatian people took just as much part in making it by electing Tudman, which was the same nationalistic fool as Slobodan Miliosevic. And by all means, dont forget to mention loyal Croation alliiance to the Nazi's at which time Croation massacared Serbs, men women and children.
why are croats and serbs discussing politics, this is a handball website........LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL
jon Gunnar@ you are soo stupid and dont talk about something that you dont know.; we werent forced into war against serbia;you sad. that says how much you know. they attacked us in our country, not one croatian soldier did not cross border and come into serbia. so what did we should do. just stand and watch as thay kill our people in our country!!!! assholl
Denmark and Sweden win until the referee with them, but they will not help against France and Spain...shame for IHF
Stop trying to re write history tonny. Croatia wasnt even an independent country and Croatian government was running Croatian Serbs out of the country, of which the Yugoslav Army was obligated to protect. Its like if people in Newcastle start running the scottish people out of their homes and making it impossible for them to live in England. Serbia never gave a toss about you Croats, they just wanted to protect Serb miniorities in Croatia and Bosnia, and they had full reason to protect themselves from you guys after what they had experienced living as a miniority under your nazi rule in world war 2.
bonjour a tous...................jon jou forget just one thing: the leader of the yougoslave resitance ie TITO.and TITO was croate..in all country there are many people with nazy (also in france, norway, danemark, ...............etc) in fact we are lost and the HANDBALL never win with this message
Handball won today, thats good!!! Even though maybe they (SE team) were irritated by people calling their moves Balkan style, which was in this case very positive as it indicates flair and innovation. But stull, that is probably why so powerful team lost or? And yes, cant help not to coment claims that they defended WHOLE EUROPE against the Turks. ahahahhhahhaha just redicolous... What would we do without you, we would not exist. Well, after thanking you for saving all life in the continent, we really need to proceed with the tournament :-)
Well deserved win for Sweden. Good luck in the semi-finals from a Croat from Našice (now in Zagreb : ) Our battle at the torunament was lost the moment Goluža started with his calculations at the halftime of the Croatia - Denmark game. And wtf? Kopljar in the game, most important game of the tournament? I'm sorry Marko but you really are a dumb player. When Ivano Balić throws away his bandages in the game...you know what time is it. Once again, well done Sweden, and good luck! :)
Can we speak about handball instead of geography and war? Balkans are what they are- like it or not. Croatians are trying to get rid of the balkan "stamp" for only god knows why ? Can´t see anything negative in the term. Lord, Europe has been in war with each other regualry from the dawn of time and European is still not offensive. Balkans, Baltics, Iberian, Scandinavian, Nordic..... please... you are acting like children... and making balkan into a synonym of calling a black person the n word is just beyond ridicule. And Croatia, if you were so disliked by some of my countrymen (in which you claim here in this thread), have you really forgotten who was the first country to acknowledge your indipendence ? Please, spare us this nonsense as you know this is not to offend. Back to handball: I am hoping for a full NORDIC or even SCANDINAVIAN triumph when the medal ceremony takes place!
