Semifinals finalized: Sweden vs. France, Denmark vs. Spain

Semifinals finalized: Sweden vs. France, Denmark vs. Spain

The last two matches of both Main Round groups had to decide the constellation in the semi-finals: And as Denmark beat Sweden they ranked first in group II and meet Spain in the semi-final on Friday on 28 January (20:30) in Kristianstad. France won the group I by their seventh victory against Iceland and will play against host Sweden (18:00) in Malmö on Friday. Spain and France are equal in points, but France have the better goal difference and rank ahead the Iberians. Denmark is the only team with eight victories in eight matches and lead the final ranking with 10:0 points ahead of Sweden (6:4). Aside Serbia beat Argentina and play for the places 9/10 against Norway. The Gauchos will meet Germany in the 11/12 placement match.

Semi-finals:
Sweden – France (Friday, 28.01, 18.00 in Malmö)
Denmark – Spain (Friday, 28.01, 20.30 in Kristianstad)

Placement matches:
5/6: Iceland – Croatia (Friday, 28.01, 20.30 in Malmö)
7/8: Hungary – Poland (Friday, 28.01, 18.00 in Kristianstad)
9/10: Norway – Serbia (Thursday, 27.01 in Kristianstad)
11/12: Germany – Argentina (Thursday, 27.01 in Kristianstad)

Group I in Jönköping:

France – Iceland 34:28 (16:13)

Reigning champion France saved the powers of some key players, so that the level of performance of both opponents was equal most of the time. In the re-match of the Olympics final of Beijing a huge number of spectators cheered for Iceland. The Northern Europeans kept up for a long time with the main contender of the title. Even as France led at the break they didn’t have full control of the game. In the second half the result remained equal with advantages for France, even as Iceland did all they could to stop the champion. But “le Bleus” played as cold as ice and extended the gap in the second part of the second half to four and five goals. France played more efficient in attack and the Icelandics couldn’t cope with this style of play. In the end the distance were six goals and France again showed their absolute will to win their next title. But first they meet host Sweden in the semis.

Group II in Malmö/Lund:

Denmark – Sweden 27:24 (17:11)

The Nordic duel was played in a brilliant atmosphere in the sold-out Arena Malmö - with each 50% fan groups from both countries. As both teams had been qualified for the semi-finals before the importance was more prestige than sportive. But the base for Sweden was a bad one: They had to replace their important left-handed players Kim Anderson and Oscar Carlen. As Anderson is out for the rest of the World Championship due to a broken hand bone, Carlen might return to the semi-final after a knee injury. Until the 9:9 the match was equal with strong goalkeepers – Matthias Anderson (Sweden) and Niklas Landin (Denmark) - on both sides. Denmark went away thanks to the saves of Landin and even scored with one player less on the field. At a score of 12:9 for Denmark, Sweden missed a penalty shot and then Hans “Majestaet” Lindbergh scored twice to the intermediate score of 15:10, before his teammates extended the distance to six goals at the break. And after the break the Danish defence even improved in a highly tough and emotional match. The Swedish had to struggle hard for every goal, as Denmark scored a big number of easy goals. When Mikkel Hansen hit the back of the net to the 25:17 a pre-decision was taken in minute 49. With his sixth goal Lars Christiansen made the Danes dance and sing at the 27:21. And even as the WCh host started their catch-up chase, they only could reduce the result to 27:24.

Serbia – Argentina 26:25 (15:13)

Both teams fought hard for the fifth and sixth place in group II in the first half. After an early Argentine lead the Serbs took control, but the Gauchos still caught up to their opponent. Then the stronger back court players were the key for the Serbian 14:10 lead, but the Southern Americans came closer to 13:15 at the break – and nothing had been decided after 30 minutes. Argentina scored four straight goals after the 13:16 and changed the lead in minute 37 to 17:16. From that moment on everything was open. Mostly Argentina took the lead and Serbia equalized, no team could extend the lead to more than one goal until minute 57. The final stage was very hectic and full of mistakes of both sides. Serbia had the great advantage and led 25:23, but Argentina stood strong. 30 minutes before the end Argentina was in ball possession at the score of 26:25 for Serbia. Coach Gallardo took his time-out – but Serbia defended well. The last chance for the gauchos was a direct free throw, but they failed. After a great Preliminary Round Argentina has lost all matches in the Main Round, Serbia took the first Main Round victory. Top scorer was Marko Vujin with six goals for Serbia.

The comments on France-Island ends with concluding about France: "But first they meet host Spain in the semis." Host Spain!? I don't think they are up to hosting, and I am not to sure about Sweden giving up their semi finale to Spain. But one can never be sure...
They fixed it
Thanks for the website. I have followed most of the French games (it seems to be logical since I am a native French), and I tend to conclude that they seem to be unstoppable unless something unusual occurs, but I doubt it. Ok, they did poorly against Spain, but they were leading 6 or 7 goals ahead till the last 10 minutes, and then our coach chose the wrong stategy, it won't happen again. I am looking forward to watching Sweden - France. Maybe Sweden can cause some trouble, but if the Frogs are able to be a few goals ahead quickly in the game, the Swedes will have a hard time because there is way too much experience in the French team. I foresee a 100% latin finale Spain-France... In any event, good luck to all four teams, and whoever the best wins!!!!
Max, I would have to agree with you. The Final Match and the Bronze Match have already been played (during Round II), now it becomes official. I'm pulling for Denmark over Spain and I'm pulling for Sweden over France. Handball 2011 photos available http://nordic-handball.blogpot.com Good Luck to all the teams and congrats to the Final Four
i have been looking into the world rank since 1990... and notice that there havent been an absolute dominion on this sport but a "relative dominion". One could say that Sweden relaively ruled in the 90´s as France did from 2000-2010. But will the rule for another decade...Dont think so as this sport is becoming increaisingly competitive.
I think 2005-2015 would be more precise for the french team. They were constantly near the top from 2000 to 2005 but didn't actually win that many competitions.
I was following the games, and I would say that were some big surprises...Argentina over Sweden by 5 goals,Croatia over Argentina by 18 goals!!!,and next Sweden played great and beat Croatia .Danemark barely beat Serbia, and even if they are undefeated ,I don't know if they will be able to pull the one against Spain(possible ,but will be a lot tougher than any games they played so far).France was able to rest some guys in the last game and they always looked to be in control..with the injuries that Sweden has and regardless of playing home,I think France will be unstoppable. If they will see Spain or Denmark in the finals,I don't believe that they will give a second chance to either team. They are very impressive and probably are the only team that did not sweat to win any matches so far.Hope for some great matches and why not for at least a surprise(to prove myself wrong)Good luck to all !
France win over Sweden, Spain over Denmark.. France win over Spain, Denmark over Sweden... so... 1st France - 2énd Spain- 3rd Denmark - and Sweden last thats how its gonna be ;-)
I don't think that Sweden has any chance to reach the final. Kim Andersson is gonna miss the game. That is gonna handicap the Swedish team a lot. Added to that fact, we have to admit that the Swedish team is not practising a fair handball during this WC. That reveals us some instability in their defence row. The statistics of IHF shows us that Sweden earned 2 minutes almost twice as much as France in this WC, and that the Swedish back players are less efficient than the French players. Even if Sweden plays at home, and some people may think that it is an advantage, mental force and the public's pushing will not be enough to beat a team like France. The French players are really professional, and I am pretty sure that they will impose a high game play level during 60 min to the Swedish team and not 40 min as they did until now against other teams.
France will probably win it all, either against Spain or Denmark in the final. Spain- Denmark looks like a very close match, but i give a slight advantage to the danes, since they are almost playing on home turf. I have a rather hard time imagining Sweden beat France, they are definetely the weakest team left of the 4 remaining.
However wins this championship, I'm really pleased to see again Sweden back to the top, as this team has always in the past developped an attractive game with world class players. I would answer to all French people and others (I'm French) that no game is played before it is effectively played...so Sweden can win, for sure. Over the 4 teams qualified, I consider Denmark is without any doubt a world class team that can be the team of the next decade, and I like that. Nothing is more boring than a team outrageously dominating its sport, even if this is my favorite team. And one day, I'm looking forward to seeing Russia coming back to the top.
Sweden didn't even play with the best players and Sweden lost with only three goals and if it was the litle better players in Sweden - Denmark they would win. When it comes to Spain and France I think that Denmark goes to the final and if Sweden have the players they had against Croatia I think they maybe have a chance against France
Go Denmark !!!!!
I agree with most people that France will end up as the winner of this World Cup - they are just to strong for any of the other teams. On the other hand the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place are wide open! Spain-Denmark is going to be a very equal match, since both teams seem to have the same lavel these days. Even though Sweden might loose to France, i still see them as a realistic winner of the bronze-final due to their home crowd - that will be tough for Spain to play against. I know Denmark also have brouht many supporters with them, but Sweden has already faced the danes, i might know how to break them this time! I'm looking so much forward to the semi-finals
The thing that still amazes me the most regarding this French team is that some key players are absent (i.e., Daniel Narcisse a.k.a Mr Air France and Guillaume Gilles). Also, new young and talented players, such as Xavier Barachet, who twisted his ankle 2-3 games ago, played amazingly against Iceland. Claude Onesta has done a fantastic job to manage this team, not only he has very experienced key players, but bringing progressively new talented young players will help in the long run.
My prediction for the final : Spain 29 - France 28 Spain World champion
Interesting semis. Francia seems stronger and they play so intensive match that ít´s the favourite N1 in my modest opinion. But the other three are playing in high quality -specially Spain and Denmark- that all can be seen. I saw the first half Spain-Iceland (20-10) and was impressive attack and defense by spaniars. So I bet for France to goes on to Final (Sweden has really few chances because their injuriy players and, of course, France) and the other semis I think that will be a decision of the referees (really it´s yet a blue point of handball). Do you think that organizer let a Latin final?? Umm, tough question, isn´´t it?. Anyone could see that there were different criteria to set in one match to another depending of referees couple. It´s a pity because this sport is very attractive and competitive but the referees have too much influence and responsability! Good luck for all teams and a little bit more for sunny Spain (they are the surprise of tournament)!!! :-)
Everybody will remember the World Championship 2007, for which the referees did not do a good job, and for which everything was "centered" around Germany. However, I think that time has passed, and we will see a very discipline Spanish team against Denmark. No matter how the referee can be biased, I still think that discipline and competitiveness will lead to victory. The Spain - Denmark semi-finale is certainly a "must watch". It might be harder for the Latin countries since the crowd will majorly favor Denmark and Sweden, but both France and Spain are experienced enough to counterbalance the crowd. I think the key is to get an early lead for France and Spain so that the crowd can be somewhat shut down... I am glad Sweden is back in the final four, a team for which I have high respect.
I really think the people are taking lightly on the potiential of the danish team! The have properly the best tema of line and wing players, it does not matter which player is in on these positions they are playing very well and during the tournament none of the players on these positions has been playing all 60 minutes which mean they still are ion condition to run, run and run and that is what the danish tema do best. the press up the speed of the game to a pace where other teams can follow and then they also have the X factor in Mikkel Hansen! This guy is almost unstopable and will be very dominant in the years to come... I really think that the people commenting on this site is not taking Denmark seriously, and the fact is that they are still unbeaten and only was in a thight finish with the polish team so far.. The Danish team is very young and skillfull and have a bright future ahead of it. I am very much looking forward to see how they are going to handle Spain, but more important France in the final.. As I see the true and right final should be between Denmark and France on Sunday, the two best playing team in this tournament... Good luck to all! :)
Hi Rune, please have a look to my previous comment above, regarding Denmark...you'll see that not everybody takes this team for nothing...and I'm French..and pleased to watch Denmark at the TV, because I like this sport. However, Spain is a big piece of meat, bigger than Poland or Croatia over this tournament. This will be a very interesting semi, that Denmark will play at home... See you after the semis
Congrats to the Final Four Teams, I'm pulling for a Denmark Final, I haven't seen France nor Spain play but I suspect they will be tough to defeat. Good Luck to all !! More photographs from the Handball Championship at http://nordic-handball.blogspot.com

TICKETS LEFT FOR SWEDEN-FRANCE SEMI-FINAL
GO DENMARK!!
GO DANISH VIKINGS!
Danemark fans showed how to be stupid .... fair play as it is known in scnadinavian countries doesnt exist. Barbie pseudo fairness died(well it doesnt mean the danish crew is same build but it explain their head functionality). Hope these ppl will burn in hell !!!!! go FRANCE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You right Hans : it happened in the match Danemark - Poland 28:27 as the danish fans whistle along playing the polish national anthem. That is not fair though the teams, means the men are very friendly people who respect each other even the opponent. So the danish crew is ok but their fans are really, really bad example for this SPORT. I ensure you it would never happen in Poland or Germany or France but the fact is it happens in a Scandinavian country where other Scandinavian country played.
