Croatia and Iceland book ticket for Olympics qualification tournaments

Thanks to their 28:24 victory against Poland in the decisive Main Round match in Malmö Croatia finish the group ranked third – and booked their ticket for the Olympics qualification tournament in April 2012. In the placement match 5/6 the Croats will meet Iceland, which can’t overtaken as group third in group I in Jönköping after Hungary lost against Spain. Iceland are also qualified for this tournament directly, no matter how they play against France later. Hungary and Poland play for the decisive seventh place on Friday – and only the winner is qualified for the Olympics qualification tournament. Spain remained unbeaten with their seventh victory in their eighth match. Depending on the result France –Iceland they finish first or second in their group.

Group I in Jönköping:

Spain – Hungary 30:24 (13:13)

Spain had been qualified for the semi-finals before and despite this fact they played with full power. Hungary needed to win to have chances for the 5/6 match after their victory over Germany the day before. In the starting period no team was dominant, the lead changed several times and both sides took the profit of their strong goalkeepers. As both opponents were on eye level the 13:13 was well-deserved. The key figure for the match was minute 43, when the Hungarians had two players less on the field due to suspensions. Spain extended the lead to 20:16, but the Magyars could come closer again. Thanks to their cleverness and experience Spain kept the lead until the end, even as Hungary could reduce the distance to 23:25 – but playing high risk in this period the Iberians punished all Hungarian mistakes without mercy. The final result 30:24 meant a too huge distance concerning the run-down of the match.

Group II in Malmö/Lund:

Croatia – Poland 28:24 (13:11)

Both teams started nervous and hectic due to the importance of this game concerning the qualification for the Olympics qualification tournaments. Surprisingly Polish coach Bogdan Wenta started with a very young team including shooter Mateusz Zaremba and left stars like Bielecki or Lijewski on the bench. And especially Zaremba showed some great shots in the beginning was responsible for the early 6:3 lead for Poland. But then Croatia found their rhythm in a tough match with a lot of suspensions. With his fourth goal Buntic equalized at 9:9 and the Croats extended the lead to 11:9 and 13:11 at the break. And as the Polish attack started even weaker than before the Croats went on to 17:12 in minute 35 though Polish goalkeeper Slawomir Szmal saved his teams from an even bigger distance. As the Croatian defense improved and the Polish didn’t have means to score the distance arose further on to 23:18, as left wing Manuel Strlek scored four times by counter attack in 14 minutes. And even as the Poles fought hard until the end, the gap was too big to close. Now they have to hope for a victory against Hungary in the placement match 7/8. Top scorer was Buntic with seven goals for Croatia, three players scored each four times for Poland.

My dear Poland, WHY SO BAD?!?!?!
I'm sad, because Croatia won the with Poland.
Congrats to Croatia and Iceland for qualifying for the Olympics see more handball photo at http://nordic-handball.blogspot.com
Tomasz Tłuczyński beautifully made penalty shots.
Even though I am from Iceland I somehow feel it would be more fair if Hungary went to play for the 5th place. Iceland was playing extremely bad in the main round. The team topped at the opposite time as Hungary, Hungary played pretty good ball in main round while Iceland played extremely well in preliminary round. I just hope we will win Croatia to exit the tournament with at least some dignity.
Sweden is so lucky that our goalkeepers sucked this tournament. Almost every match we had like 3,4 saves againt 15,16 saves. Its like we started every match with minus 10 and still the teams didnt beat us with 10,15+. With a good mirko croatia would be easy in the semifinals
Only one ball separated Croatia from semi-finals. Even with this unbalanced tournament play, Domagoj Duvnjak had a chance to put Croatia to semifinals. He had the last ball againts Serbia - if he scored - Croatia Wins, and steps ahead of Sweden.
I think the croatian team as a whole played below their real level starting with balic. It was not just the goalkeepers.
with good goalkeeper we would play final and i think won. our defence was no bad our keeper had 4 saves and our opponet scored less than 30 goals. it wasnt problem in attack bacause we scored every opponet more than last game when we played. with them.croatia had this year strong team maybe with metličić we would be stronger, soo sad
Jon Gunnar very fair and nice comment! I'm from Hungary. Maybe we deserve it maybe not. The problem against Iceland is our team is tired because we travel to Sweden just one day before the match and we haven't got any time to rest. So we make a big mistake because we have to travel earlier to Sweden. But the point is Iceland and Hungary unfortane in the draw because the best 3-3 teams at the C and D group( Denmark,Croatia,Serbia,Sweden,Poland,Argentina) is weaker then the A,B group best teams (France,Spain,Germany,Iceland,Hungary,Norway). If maybe Iceland and Hungary in Group C or D you or us qualify for the semi finals... :/ Anyway i'm very proud my nation because we stand up the floor many times at this tournament: - after Iceland beat us, we beat Norway - after France beat us with 13(!) goals we beat Germany!!! - and we play a good tight match with Spanish, but in the end of the match we tired so much And for the end especially thanks to Norway who beat Germany, and thanks for that we have a chance to qualify for the Olympics, i think we deserve it! GOGO Hungary against Poland!!!
To win against Serbian would not help Croatia to reach semi, so you are right Adriano. But a better goalkeeper would do that for sure. I happy we got chance to play for Olympic games anyway.
CROATIA ROCKS!<3
elpee: Hungary has a good team. Maby not stronger than the icelandic team, but your game against Germany was great!
