LUND – THE CITY OF IDEAS

Situated in the centre of the attractive and expansive Öresund region in southern Sweden, Lund is one of the oldest cities in Sweden with a history more than one thousand years old. Over the centuries it has earned a reputation for being a place where people meet, and, today, more than ever, Lund is a meeting place for ideas and creativity.

Here, the Lund University, the Ideon science park, the multicultural atmosphere and the historical surroundings make up a unique combination. This, along with its central situation, has turned Lund into an international city where ideas are born - ideas that build enterprises and achieve successes both nationally and internationally.

From within a radius of just over a kilometre from our 850-year old Cathedral and the historic centre of Lund, many innovations have been created that have touched the lives of many people around the world. Lund is the birthplace of Tetra Pak paper packaging, ultrasound diagnostics, AstraZeneca’s asthma medication and turbuhalers, SonyEricsson’s modern mobile telephony, Bluetooth, the Inkjet printer, the Gambro artificial kidney, Axis network cameras and many more things that have changed peoples lives to the better.

And in a couple of years, Lund will through the establishing of the very large cutting edge research facilities MaxLab IV and the European Spallation Source ESS create a world-leading centre for materials research and development.

LUND – THE CITY OF HANDBALL

Lund is also the City of Handball – sporting an exceptional handball heritage. We – a city of a mere 100 000 inhabitants – have no fewer than four top level handball teams. On occasions, the Swedish national handball team has been more or less based on players from Lund.

And every year since 1978, Lund has also hosted the international tournament Lundaspelen. Being one of the largest youth handball tournaments in the world, it is well-known and respected for its excellent organisation. Last year, the 32nd Lundaspelen gathered no fewer than 8 500 handball players from 504 teams in 15 nations.
