IcelandGroup B / Mainround 1 / Placement

It was a real rollercoaster ride in 2008: In between two months the Icelandic team had their absolute low and their absolute high. In June they missed the qualification for the World Championship 2009 in Croatia by failing against FYRO Macedonia, two months later they celebrated the biggest success ever in Icelandic team sports history by winning the Silver medal at the Olympics in Beijing. And in January 2010 they took their next medal by beating Poland in the Bronze final of the EURO in Austria, what aside meant the direct qualification for the WCH 2011.

The little island with small population brought several handball heroes and world stars like Olafur Strefansson, Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson or Robert Gunnarsson. The Icelandic team developed in the last few years and became world class as collective, not only as individuals like before. In Sweden the “Vikings” will play their eleventh World Championship.
