GermanyGroup A / Mainround 1 / Placement

It’s only four years ago since Germany had become (for the third time in history) World Champion on home ground, but since then the team has changed completely. A lot of former stars have finished their careers and became coaches (like Christian Schwarzer or Markus Baur), TV experts (like Stephan Kretzschmar) or managers (like Volker Zerbe). A new generation led by World Champions like Michael Kraus, Johannes Bitter or Pascal Hens is currently on the field. But they haven't reached a medal since 2007.

At the Olympics 2008 Germany failed after the Preliminary Round, at the WCH in Croatia they missed the semi very closely (despite winning no match in the Main Round) and ranked fifth in the end, before rank 10 at the EURO 2010 in Austria meant the worst EURO result ever.

Coach Heiner Brand is building a team for the future, especially the Olympics 2012 in London. He’s the living legend as he’s, aside Russian Vladimir Maximov, the only person in handball to become World Champion as a player (1978) and a coach (2007). Including former GDR, German teams have won eleven medals at World Championships since 1938 – but now have to fight hard in the Preliminary Round in Sweden as they have to face the World Champions Spain and France.

As the 22nd World Championship will be played in Sweden, Germany was participating 20 times before, only in 1997 they missed the qualification.
