Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria to Sweden 2011
Here's a report from the African semi-finals, that made clear two of three participants in Sweden 2011. Once again thanks to Björn Pazen:
It was a hard struggle, but in the end the host nation has reached the men’s final of the 19th African championships: Egypt beat Algeria in a very close semifinal 26:24. Algeria was ahead most of the first half and led 13:11 at the break. After the 15:14 for Algeria the second half remained completely equal – and the host had to fight hard to control the match. But five minutes before the end, the sensation was very close, as Algeria led 24:22 – but then they lacked power and concentration.
Egypt, supported by their frenetic spectators in Cairo, scored four consecutive goals in the final stage and secured the qualification for the final – and the direct qualification for the World Championship 2011 in Sweden like Tunisia before.
The second semifinal was the complete contrast: Tunisia was absolutely dominant against DR Congo, and the game was decided even at the break and a 20:8 lead for the favoured team. Led by outstanding Wissem Hmam, Tunisia extended the lead from 7:1 in minute 12 to 17:6. As the winner was obvious, Tunisia saved powers for the final against their old rival Egypt, but won clearly 37:22. Before Angola had beaten Morocco 30:24 in the 5th place game.
Update: In the Bronze match Algeria beated DR Congo (30:22) and won the third and last ticket to Sweden. Tunisia won the gold medals by winning the final against Egypt (24:21).
